Horse Rescue, Rehab & Adoption
Adopting a horse from Horse About, Inc. At Horse About, Inc. our mission is to find safe, loving, long-term homes for our horses. The majority of our horses are here because of abuse or neglect. It is our goal to ensure proper care of these animals, not only on the farm, but in their new homes as well. At Horse About, Inc. we will specialize in finding and rehabilitating lame horses for use in our programs or for adoption. -
Horse About Adoption Policies
Please read everything in this section before going to our listings.Horse About does not sell horses, but rather adopts them out to suitable and approved homes. Horse About horses cannot be resold, re-homed or bred and should the need arise and you are no longer able to care for these animals they must be returned to Horse About (adoption fees will not be refunded). Potential adopters may test ride a horse twice before making a decision. An Adoption Application is required.
++ADOPTION FEES -- Assigned to each horse based on their capabilities and help defer the costs incurred by their rescue and rehabilitation. [Click HERE for more information]
SEEING A HORSE -- Horses are shown to prospective adopters by appointment only. Please do not show up at any of our farms without an appointment and/or unannounced. Trespassing on any Horse About property is not allowed.
ADOPTION AREA -- Horse About adopts out to individuals who are residents of North Carolina. For the health and safety of our horses we don't make exceptions to this policy.
FOSTER HOMES -- Some horses require extended healing time, have a condition that needs rehabilitation or are just suitable as companion horses. Note: No rideable horses are eligible for foster care. Foster care means you house the horse at either your home or an approved boarding facility and pay all that horse's expenses, which are tax deductible. If you would like to foster a horse, please fill out and submit our adoption application (Write FOSTER at the top.)
HORSE SPONSORS -- Any Horse About horse is eligible for sponsorship. The fee helps to offset costs while the horse is at Horse About. Sponsors receive a photo and history of their horse along with being acknowledged on the web site. Sponsors are welcome to come and visit their horses, but MAY NOT ride it. Click HERE for more information on how you can become a sponsor.
**Adoption fees
Adoption fees are assigned to each horse based on their capabilities and help defer the costs incurred by their rescue and rehabilitation.Companion animals range from $0 - $200
Rideable horses range from $300 - $1200Why do I have to pay an adoption fee?
Horse About Horse Rescue depends on you, the public and our own money to maintain the animals we have in our care. We ask for an adoption fee to help cover the expenses of running the rescue. 100% of the money obtained through adoptions and donations goes back into the rescue. We do not have paid employees. We operate through volunteers and donation. Adoption fees and donations aid in the care of many other needy horses. It helps to keep Horse About running and continue in our mission.
Does paying an adoption fee mean I own the horse?
No, this is not a sale but an adoption. We hold co-ownership of the animals adopted to make sure they are never sold, bred or sent to auction. Most people do not realize the tremendous financial commitment it takes to properly own and care for a horse. We try to educate them so they can see how little the adoption fees is in relation to the usual cost of purchasing a horse.
How are adoption fees assessed to each animal?
Fees vary depending on the ability and age of the animal. We keep our fees reasonable to encourage people to adopt animals from us. We are NOT out to make a profit, but to educate people and rescue animals in need.

Sponsorship
The horses listed on this page are not available for adoption. They are permanent residents due to their special needs, injuries or have become members of our blind herd.Since they cannot be adopted out, for whatever reason, they require Horse About to care for them for the remainder of their lives. Some of their needs can be quite costly and for that reason they are listed on our sponsor page.
Each horse can be sponsored by more than one person, so please consider being a sponsor for one of our wonderful horses.

Healthy Stride Program
Jim Crew has developed a system of evaluating, shoeing and trimming horses through decades of experience in equine biomechanics and farriery. Having worked with and owned many high end show horses, Jim has been successful in evaluating and shoeing for a balanced posture of the whole horse's not just shoeing the feet to a formula. Healthy Stride is the personal farrier to the performance horses owned by Linda and Pat Parelli and their natural horsemanship program. In our own barn, horse owners have been brought to tears after their horses have been balanced and shod. The horses are able to perform fluidly whereas they were unable to trot or canter just before being balanced."There are many well-known and practiced shoeing or trimming methods that address diseases of the hoof, equine movement and its many issues. Think of Healthy Stride as an addition to this foundation of excellent shoeing and trimming practices. Healthy Stride shoes or trims according to the entire equine body instead of just the hoof. Our goal is to achieve perfect posture and symmetry (Zero Balance), allowing the horse to move freely and soundly. " - Jim Crew
